Program Objective

This learning and mentorship program is designed to enhance the knowledge, skill and ability of senior level executives such as Deputy Chiefs, Superintendents, or equivalent, and equivalent civilian Senior Police Executives, who have a career goal of becoming a Chief of Police or equivalent.

Program Description

The CACP Police Executive Mentorship Program will address six key learning themes:

  • Preparing for the position;
  • Arriving in the position;
  • Managing and affecting change;
  • Navigating and meeting the challenges of being a Chief of Police;
  • Identifying opportunities to lead change;
  • Considering the future position and issues the participant may face.

NOTE: Presenters will be drawn from the public, police and private sectors in order to enhance candidate awareness of the importance and value of partnerships.

Candidate Eligibility Criteria

The following criteria will be applied in determining candidates for this program;

    1. Be a CACP member in good standing.
    2. Holds a senior executive level position such as Deputy Chief, Superintendent, or equivalent in rank or an equivalent senior civilian police executive.
    3. Plans to stay active in the field of policing for a minimum of 5 years.
    4. Holds a bachelor’s degree or equivalent career experience and education.
    5. Have a career goal of becoming Chief of Police or equivalent 

Candidate Application & Selection Process

Candidate Application Process

Candidates must complete the application form and submit a package that includes the following;

      1. A description of career goals and steps taken to achieve them
      2. A demonstration of commitment to life-long learning
      3. An outline of learning and mentoring needs as well as expectations from the program to facilitate alignment with a mentor
      4. A confirmation of commitment to participate in all program sessions and activities
      5. A resume (no more than 4 pages)
      6. A photograph (headshot of publishable quality)
      7. A letter of endorsement from your Chief of police or equivalent.

Candidate Selection Process

The Chief Executive Officer of the CACP will review the applications and will provide the CACP Executive Committee with the names of applicants who meet the eligibility criteria and for whom the CACP has received a complete written application.

The CACP Executive Committee will approve the candidates based upon:

        • The candidate meets the program criteria
        • The application package meeting the specified criteria
        • Availability of seats in the program session
        • Consideration of the CACP’s focus on fostering authentic inclusion

Where the number of qualified applicants exceeds the maximum capacity of the program, the CACP Executive Committee will create a waiting list and assign the order of admission should a vacancy occur.

Where an applicant has been approved for admission to the program and no space is available, they will be given preference in a subsequent program.

Confirmation Policy

All candidates are subject to approval by the CACP and are not considered approved until all application materials are received and reviewed. Candidates will receive confirmation of approval by June 13th, 2025, after which registrations will be considered final and not subject to cancellation with refund.

Mentorship Eligibility Criteria

1. Must be a CACP Member in good standing.
2. Currently serving as a Chief of police or equivalent.
3. Availability to serve as a Mentor during the designated program period.

Mentor Selection Process

1. The CACP membership will be canvassed to obtain expressions of interest from current Chiefs of police.
2. The CACP will make the final decision on the alignment of mentors and candidates.
