Statement: Public safety focus of Canada’s Fall 2024 Economic Update

On December 16, the federal government released its Fall 2024 Economic Update which included important investments in public safety, with a significant focus on securing Canada's borders.

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) welcomes the announcement of additional funding to support police and border officer efforts to deter, detect and disrupt organized crime, and the flow of illegal drugs, firearms, human trafficking, along with the movement of high-risk travelers across the Canada-United States border.

Canadian and US law enforcement partners collaborate in joint force operations aimed at border security and protecting Canadian and US citizens from criminal activity. Maintaining these ongoing relationships and expanding our operational capacity to meet the ever-evolving domestic and transnational crime trends is critical to maintaining public safety and addressing complex challenges presented by criminals on both sides of our shared border.

In cooperation with our US law enforcement partners, the federal government’s Fall 2024 Economic Update provides Canadian policing with an opportunity to strengthen the integrated operational capacity of police and border officers to fulfill our collective commitment to ensuring a secure border and safe communities.
