The CACP selects two individuals to receive its Recognition Award

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA – During the Opening Ceremonies of the 120th Annual Summit of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), two individuals who have demonstrated exceptional involvement, extraordinary support, and outstanding initiative in advancing the CACP’s goals and strategic priorities received the CACP Recognition Award.

Chosen by the President, the winners of this distinguished award are considered to be leaders among leaders, individuals who exemplify the association’s values of courage, integrity, respect, transparency, inclusiveness, excellence and compassion.

The CACP recognized the contributions of Senior Deputy Commissioner Bryan Larkin of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

He was recognized for his extensive police leadership experience that includes serving as the Chief of the Waterloo Regional Police Service, Chief of the Guelph Police Service, Director at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and President of the CACP.

Senior Deputy Commissioner Larkin has helped drive some of the most important national policing conversations of our time, helping steer the CACP’s thoughtful and principled contributions to critical debates. He has had the opportunity to work alongside CACP committees, members, partners and stakeholders to generate a path for change that creates an appropriate balance between the needs and concerns of the Canadian communities we serve and those of the members of the Canadian police services who deliver that service.

“Bryan Larkin is a champion of the CACP,” stated Commissioner Thomas Carrique, current President of the CACP. “He consistently provides support and guidance behind the scenes. He believes in people, and he believes in growing the next generation of leaders.”

Congratulations also go out to Staff Superintendent Dirk Niles of the Peel Regional Police.

He is a distinguished law enforcement leader with 26 years of policing experience with the Peel Regional Police Service and recently was appointed to the Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

Dirk Niles currently serves as Staff Superintendent of Innovation and Technology but he has held diverse roles demonstrating versatility and a deep understanding of policing. During this time, he has continually demonstrated not only his dedication to the profession, but a deep and forward-thinking commitment to its evolution.

Staff Superintendent Niles is a graduate of the CACP’s Police Executive Mentorship Program and was selected to expand his mentorship experience as a guest member of the CACP Board of Directors. His outstanding engagement, insights and recommendations on national policing matters left a lasting impression. As a result, he was asked to take on the complex task of leading the CACP’s committee realignment project — an initiative aimed at improving governance, reducing duplication, enhancing efficiency, and improving the connection between committees and the Board.

“Staff Superintendent Niles is a police leader who stepped up with energy, precision and purpose leading to the introduction of a new streamlined committee reporting structure and online reporting tool,” stated Commissioner Carrique. “The work is still in progress but will leave a permanent mark on the CACP. His action- and client-oriented approach exemplifies the best of what we hope for in our association’s future.
