Road Safety Initiatives
Operation Impact 2007
Operation Impact is a collaborative effort of Canadian police services in order to enforce the laws against high risk activities of road users. This 4 day event starts on the Friday of the Thanksgiving weekend and ends on the evening of Thanksgiving Monday. This law enforcement initiative has both enforcement and education components and is designed to increase public compliance with and awareness of safe driving measures and, ultimately, to save lives.
This year, the enforcement component of this campaign targeted impaired driving, lack of occupant restraint use, and aggressive driving. The education component focused on addressing the importance of safe driver behavior. Through these activities, we hope to raise public awareness of Road Safety Vision 2010 in order to make Canada s roads the safest in the world.
2007 is designated as the provincial year for Traffic Safety in Quebec. The law enforcement community in Quebec have many planned ongoing road safety initiatives events to support their year of road safety. Due to this, we experience a decrease in the number of Quebec agencies participating in Operation Impact this year, however, many of their major police forces did participate in Operation Impact and submitted their results to us.
This year, we experienced an increase in the number of major police forces across Canada that participated and submitted their results to us during 2007 Operation Impact.
